Early that same morning before daylight broke the autumn skies , Opal was busy in the lab getting ready for her evening appointment. She had to stop her work and go into the restroom. Edward was waiting outside the lab door for this opportunity. When the bathroom door closed he stepped into the lab. He moved swiftly quiet as a shadow he advanced stealthily into the dimly lit laboratory that he shared with his daughter.
Henry watched with his cat eyes from his perch on the sill of the partially opened window. Henry knew Edward, so he wouldn’t give him away. With swift exact movements, he made his way to the wall safe. Opal would be in the bathroom for a brief time, so he had to work with considerable speed. He put the flashlight between his teeth spotlighting the worn dial. His gentle fingers turned the knob to the right then to the left and back again to the right. The heavy ancient door clicked open. He removed the envelope from the bottom shelf and replaced what was inside it with perfect fake copies. He pushed the heavy door closed, and gave the dial a quick whirl for good measure.
The commode flushed and the running of water in the sink was his signal to leave. When Opal’s hand giggled the bathroom door handle, the agent made a fast and soundless departure out of the same door he had come in. With the envelope in his hand, he walked down the expansive hallway and closed the front door behind him with a quiet click.
Back in the lab Opal heard the front door as it closed and mumbled to herself, “Dad must have an early appointment.”
Opal went to the safe to check one last time that the contents of the envelope resting on the bottom shelf were safe.
While she waited for evening she went to work on a new project. Henry purred knowingly.
Unknown to Edward another set of eyes were watching him, following his every move that day.
